Should an "ugly" girl write a beauty blog?

I was on the fence about starting a beauty blog for ages. I thought, "I'm clearly no makeup expert and it's debatable whether I'm even an attractive person!" Lucky for me, my husband swears up and down that I am, indeed, pretty.  Extremely lovely and sweet readers have also insinuated as such. As we all know, it takes more than looks to avoid being ugly.  A kind person is never ugly, in my book.  We all have imperfections and insecurities (even the stunning among us). I, for one, have a "huge schnoz," as this commenter pointed out (on this blog post - a food blog I started randomly but am abandoning because it's a pain):

Youre a piece of trash because I read what you wrote on another girl's blog, implying that her "goth" makeup style is ???
get it through your head
In general,I disagree with telling anyone how to wear their foundation,blush/powder/eyelineretc. Everyone has their own style. Many light people tend to go light/lighter or mix it with a luminzer to make themselves brighter/radiant/porcelin like. An example would be dita von teese, who stays out the sun to maintain her light skintone and wears light foundation. Others prefer to be dark/darker andsunbathe or use bronzer all over their skintone. Different people have different preferences. You sit here and claim you love makeup but you have no respect for akeup style sof others. You have a huge shnoz and thin lips! horrid combo
I can sit here and tell you youre makeup is ???!
take your anorexic vegan ass out f here! no man wants an anorexic toothpick!Look up marilyn monroe,vida guerra,kim kardashain,shakira,jessica simpson,mulher melao,mayra veronica,coco austin,Sarah lime,Monica santiago,etc
Now, I'm not sure what ??? even means in this context, and I've always admired a variety of makeup styles so I have a feeling she got offended by some ambiguous phrasing on my part.  I'd love to see the post that got this person so fired up that they'd want to post insults, not on my beauty blog but on my comparitively unpopular food log blog.  I have no idea what comment of mine she is referring to and don't even think hunting and pecking would allow me to find it!

Now, I think pointing out my nose and (thin? really?) lips is kind of un-called-for (uncalled for? don't know how to spell that).  Yeah, obviously I have a big nose. I even had surgery to shave down the bump on it and straighten it, and that wasn't entirely successful (though it does have an improved appearance).  Obviously, with such a prominent nose I've had insecurity about it my whole life so I wonder what's up with the vicious trolling?  You want to take a dig at the scar on my nose, too, while you're at it?

Why would anyone respond with offensive comments when they are offended themselves? If I am indeed "trash," I can welcome this commenter to the bin :-P

Also, not anorexic over here.  I don't think "anorexic" even ought to qualify as an insult. It's a disease, and I know people who have suffered from it.  Anorexia is not an offront to lovely, curvy beauty idols that she's listed - it's something that requires treatment.  I also know plenty of people who are naturally thin and have to deal with accusations of eating disorders all the time, and how horrible is that?  It's just as horrible as it is when people close to me who are carrying some extra weight or are even overweight/obese feel that people are critiquing their food choices or just generally judging them.

Part of the intent of this blog is that I meant to be a 'vigilante' for girls like me.  I wanted to celebrate every type of beauty, especially non-commercial and fringe, or whatever you'd call my style.  This isn't an aspirational blog (like a lot of gorgeous fashion and makeup blogs out there - which I also love) in which I show you how model-like and beautiful I am and how fabulous my life is and look how talented I am blahblahblah. I like those blogs, too (I'd rather see somebody toot their own horn and show some self-love instead of self-loathing), but there are plenty of genuine blogging celebrities already and I don't aspire to be one. This is just my corner of the beauty blogging world in which I share my opinions of products I've tried in the hopes that it can help other regular women figure out what is worth buying (or just so we can talk about beauty products because I simply love to!).  I also always try to encourage being adventurous with makeup (hello, colorful looks!) and confident in your own beauty even if you have a big 'ol schnoz like me.  This is the only face I have so I'm determined to enjoy it, acne and all.

  1. YOU GO GIRL! I have no idea what this nutjob is talking about because you're gorgeous and super sweet!

Women are faced with so much pressure these days, I wish we were all a lot better at loving and supporting each other. We all have moments when we wish we were prettier or thinner or curvier, and rather than tearing down the girls who have what you want, we need to understand that those girls have insecurities too.

This has me so fired up right now! You stay strong, beautiful. Don't let anybody tear you down! <3

  2. I am shocked and appalled anyone would say ANYTHING like that to you. Firstly, the comment makes no sense, I could barely even understand it and I'm NOT trying to be patronising to them or anything I LITERALLY had to read and re-read it like 5 times, I still don't quite understand the point!

Secondly, er, hello, what's the problem with your 'schnoz' is that EVEN a real word? I have never ever looked at your posts and even noticed your nose, WHY anyone would decide to comment on it randomly out of nowhere just to be mean is beyond me!

Thirdly, how dare she call you anorexic. I've suffered from an ED for so long and I can tell you (as you said) ITS NOT FUN, just because you have a lovely SLIM figure does not make you annorexic and does not give anyone the right to dare to say such a thing to you, that's not insulting it's >wrong< no one would dare turn around and say to someone 'you look like you have cancer' would they? I know annorexia is not the same as cancer but it can be just as harmful and heartbreaking.

I'm sorry if I'm the one not making sense here but I was just so shocked! I hope you don't let this get to you AT ALL, I for one think you are not only beautiful but incredibly talented with makeup and I adore seeing your posts, your tips and your opinions.

Dont let some small minded person who can't even type their thoughts up accurately get you down!

Damn straight you should enjoy your face I wish mine looked more like it!

  3. Kayla, thank you so much for your support! I agree, we've got to support each other! That's what kind of kills me about this comment. I apparently offended her personally and I never mean to do that. I'm always more inclined to find beauty in unique looks so I feel terrible that she thinks I was trying to say something negative about a person's look :( Sometimes, seeing as I'm always honest, I know I've commented that a look is "not for me" and I've seen people say that about some of my more colorful looks, too, but I don't think we mean that to be insulting/judgey!

  4. Hey Sarah, hugs! You and Kayla have made me tear up, haha <3 Both of you are totally gorgeous and I love reading your blogs! I seriously wish my blog was as good as yours and Kayla's.
I think that bit about me being anorexic was just so ignorant. Maybe she just assumed that because I'm vegan? I didn't know whether to post this up because it might have just been mean comments to get a rise out of me, but she did seem really offended so I thought I'd try to set the record straight that it just doesn't sound like me to diss someone's look, "goth" or otherwise! I hate being misunderstood.

  5. Oh lovely, I'm sorry you had such a hateful comment.

Let me start off by saying that you are not ugly - at all. So please lose that thought ASAP!

The person who wrote that comment seems very angry and I have no idea what he/she is angry about but I wouldn't let it bother you too much. Unfortunately in this world, there will ALWAYS be more people who want to pull you down, as opposed to the people who like, adore and love you and want to build you up.

I have never noticed your nose and as someone with a HUGE nose herself, believe me, I notice noses in general! There is nothing wrong with you nose. If he/she wants to see a 'shnoz', they should head over to my blog!

I understand about insecurities (I really, really do. I'm the girl who's grown up always believing she's butt-ugly) so getting a message like this must be awful. But you can't let it bother you too much. Whenever I see your FOTDs, I always think how cute you are and how lovely your smile is!

So don't let this upset you. You're better than that.

  6. Hi Nazia, you are another totally beautiful girl whose blog I love! Thank you so much for all your kind words and for your awesome blog :D I don't want to perpetuate big-nose hate. I mean, it's just a nose and when the face is as pretty as yours who cares about a nose? I feel like if I look only at people's noses, all noses are kind of funny-looking, right? That's just how noses are ^.^ lol

You have many followers that I am positive would say the same so think of that and not what this 1 nasty person had to say. Keep up your wonderful blog and makeup looks cause we all love them!!!!

  11. Haha I deleted my other comment because I commented on the wrong account...so I'll just repost:

People are disgusting sometimes. You are the one person who has followed my tiny little blog from the very beginning, and you have never said ANYTHING that could even slightly be taken in a rude way, nor have I ever seen you post anything rude on anyone else's blog!

As far as having a big nose, I agree with Sarah (fashionismyh20). I have never looked at you and thought your nose was big! You are beautiful, your face is classic. Even if somebody DOES consider themselves to have a big nose, it would be rude to point it out!

Also, having a lovely figure does not make someone anorexic and as you said- that's not something to mess around about! I agree with you, 'anorexic' shouldn't be used as an insult.

The person that wrote that was completely out of line- you are beautiful and your blog is one of my favorites to read! Try not to let it bother you!

  13. Sarah you are absolutely beautiful and it is even more evident from your post that you have an incredible spirit and attitude. It is amazing how disgusting and nasty people get behind a computer screen. I just have no words---it's completely pathetic of that person and they are clearly out of line.
Don't let one bitter person get you down! Your blog is wonderful and I think you are so talented and pretty!XOXO

  14. Hey Amanda, thank you! You're a perfect example of a stunning girl who is even more drop-dead gorgeous because of who you are as a person :)

  15. oh my god!! I really can't stand silly keyboard warriors who think its ok to say nasty things to perfectly lovely people. They would obviously never dream of saying that to your beautiful face. and the big nose jab? seriously? you have a lovely nose don't ever think other wise. I really hope you don't feel bad about yourself even one bit, by what they have said. Your gorgeous anyone who says differently is obviously an idiot! Im always envious of how amazing you look!

Hope non of this has got you down
    much love

  16. Hi Natasha, thanks <3 Nope, I'm not down anymore, but just hoping I didn't make somebody feel bad, either! I really wish she'd quoted my comment or something, as I'm positive I didn't intend to offend/be rude. I'm not easily offended by mean-spirited comments and I try to have a sense of humor about my flaws :) I just love the blogging world and get so inspired by blogs (like yours) that it's such a bummer to see comments like this. The support of you and Seana, Amanda, Miranda, Nazia, Sarah, and Kayla has been so wonderful and I'm really grateful!

  18. Bloody hell!! I am very shocked by that comment, im sure that whatever she is replying to did not deserve this sort of response!
No one should have to prove themselves to everyone out there, your doesn't have to 'be' anything but your own piece of web! I'm literally in shock by this as I've never experienced anything like this yet (probably as my blog is only a wee one :)) seriously disturbing!xxx

  19. OH my lord whoever that loon is has too much time on their hands. Someone got offended because they couldn't understand what you meant (though I'm not sure how ... you write quite clearly and I can't even understand the point of that comment) and apparently went off the deep end.

You are a beautiful woman. I love your blog and I love that you embrace how you look. I've gotten troll comments about my freckles/beauty marks and I just send them right to the trash box. The only person that's "trash" is someone that would take time from their life to bring someone else down!

Love you mamacita. Keep your chin up, and ignore that bimbo!

  22. What a disgusting, hateful comment! I pity such haters; to be so bitter with someone she's never met before says a lot about her upbringing and personality. But I guess it's easier these days to release your anger to anyone's face- you just post as "anonymous" and you're safe.

Darling, the thing that drew me to your blog in the first place was your beautiful face and your lovely smile! Don't let any troll get you down, besides whoever wrote it must be a pitiful and unloved person. You are beautiful, inside and out! xx xx

  23. I'm so glad you addressed this in the way you did, putting this commenter in her place in a mature, respectful way. I seriously couldn't believe this happened to you when I started reading this post- you, of all people who blog! Good for you for sticking up for yourself! It is rude and inconsiderate to pick out someone's insecurities (especially someone who is as gorgeous as you!), but she obviously has her own fair share.
I hope you never let her negative comments or anyone else's get in the way of doing what you love. You have an amazing voice and your blog is one of my favorites to read! xox

  24. First of all, how dare you say you're ugly?! This is my first time on your blog and I just scrolled down to look at your pictures and I think you are very pretty. I don't think you have a "huge nose" at all, and your face features just fit perfectly in your face, honestly. Even if you weren't pretty for someone, that's not the point of your blog, and it's very irrelevant. You never said "I have the most beautiful face ever" on your blog so I don't see why someone would have to start complaining about it.
Everyone perceives beauty differently, and I feel like that comment was very inappropriate.

  26. Good for you, I just stumbled across your blog and was drawn to this post. Don't let other people's negative remarks get you down, well done in your mature handling of the situation. It's sad that some people feel the need to put down other people in an attempt to feel better about themselves but I am afraid that most people will come across this kind of behaviour at some point in their lives. It's called bullying and it's not ok. Don't listen to the bullies, hold your head high and keep smiling!
